0Karl Lagerfeld Retroactively Shuts His Big Mouth About Adele
Karl Lagerfeld has been known to make mean comments about overweight people in the past- doubly galling because he is a former fat dude himself- but his cutting remarks about singer Adele earlier this month seemed to really strike a nerve with the press.
Back when H&M was just getting big in the states, Lagerfeld irked the curvy community when he opined that he didn’t design his collection for the retailer to grace the fat fatness of fatties. That controversy came just after Lagerfeld had lost a significant amount of weight on a very restrictive diet and just before he began promoting said diet. But that criticism wasn’t aimed at any individual- much less a relatively young, widely admired singer who has been giving fat girls everywhere someone to look up to since she broke onto the scene last year. (In fact, any woman who has struggled with their weight will probably feel a slight sting when reading Lagerfeld’s original opinion, that Adele is “a little too fat, but she has a beautiful face and a divine voice”- it’s like the famous version of “you’d be so pretty if you lost weight.”)
After the comments were widely publicized and Lagerfeld looked like a complete mean-spirited tool worldwide, the 70-something designer apologized. Lagerfeld even alluded to his past as a person of size, saying:
“I’d like to say to Adele that I am your biggest admirer. Sometimes when you take a sentence out of the article it changes the meaning of the thought… She is my favorite singer and I am a great admirer of her… I know how it feels when the press is mean to you in regards to your appearance. Adele is a beautiful girl. She is the best. And I can’t wait for her next CD.”
Do you think the apology will ameliorate the negative reaction to Karl Lagerfeld’s original remarks?
