Romney Glitter Bomber Unrepentant, Says Arrest Was ‘Worth It’
The practice of “glitter bombing”- throwing glitter in the faces of politicians with which with glitter bombers disagree- has been growing in popularity since Newt Gingrich was glitter bombed in May of last year.
Although at the time, the protest was a bit more linked with opposition to gay marriage- a position particularly odious for Gingrich to hold since he’s had three wives and was trying to bone more women aside from that- it has also been done twice to sex columnist Dan Savage due to remarks he has made that many view as not inclusive of or understanding of trans people.
But after a glitter bombing of GOP contender for president Mitt Romney last week in Colorado, the alleged glitter bomber has been charged with some scary sounding misdemeanors. 20-year-old Peter Lucas Smith was arrested after glitter bombing Romney, and was cited for “throwing a missile” and “unlawful acts on school grounds.” And while the student may wind up booted from school for his protest, he says he doesn’t regret his actions. Smith explains:
“I was thinking about how intuitive the idea of glitter is. It’s very visible to a camera. It is very hard to deal with at the moment, especially when cameras are rolling, and it causes no physical harm.”
The political science student continued:
“For me personally, and for the people who share my political beliefs, I do believe it was worth it. However, I’m very concerned about my future, my political future, my career, my education, which I cherish more than anything else.”
A local news station did a background check, and determined that Smith does not have a record prior to the glitter bomb.
