Facebook Deletion Leads to Two Shooting Deaths in Tennessee

Last week, we posted about the practice of Facebook unfriending (deletion)- which some people take very seriously.

And one of the panics surrounding social media is when personal grievances that escalate within the site- grievances that in the past would have likely fomented offline- cross over into real life and develop into real, actual violence. Such is the case in Tennessee, where a young couple was shot to death over what police say began as a simple Facebook defriending. (The couple’s baby was found unharmed in his mother’s arms.)

According to law enforcement, Billy Payne Jr. and girlfriend Billie Jean Hayworth were found shot to death in their home in Mountain City last week, after the couple deleted Jenelle Potter from their respective Facebook accounts. However, Potter herself was not the alleged culprit in the killings- her father, Marvin Potter, is said to have targeted the couple after the defriendings. Potter’s friend Jamie Curd- who is said to have had “romantic” feelings for Jenelle Potter- was arrested as a culprit in the slayings.

The sheriff in the jurisdiction called the murders a “senseless thing.”
