Intel’s Science Talent Search discovers talented homeless teen scientist

Samantha Garvey - Intel Science Talent Search

There is nothing better than to be able to share good news about anything these days but it is even better when it involves a homeless teenager who has made it into one of the most prestigious science contests in the world.

Samantha Garvey has been working on research to discover the  effects of predators on ribbed mussels and while we might not see the importance of her work the people behind the Intel science competition being much smarter than us think otherwise.

Now when Samantha isn’t getting into the heady research world of mussels she plays the violin, studies Italian and maintains a 3.9 GPA all the while being homeless; which has been the case for her family, who have lived in shelters and hotels since she was a little girl.

The finalists for the competition will be announced in two weeks and I am rooting for Samantha but in the meantime here’s a video of this amazing young lady.

About the Author

Steven has been around the tech world long enough to see most of the stuff we think of cool happen before which leads to a certain bit of cynicism that has contributed to him being known as the cranky old fart of the Internet. Besides sharing some of the goodness that he finds with you here at 42x you can also find him curating some digital goodness at Winextra (tech type stuff) and Rotten Gumdrops (for your daily dose of WTF).
