Moss Is The Reason We’re All Alive [Study]
Approximately 480 million years ago our planet was a much hotter place and 16 times more carbon dioxide existed in our atmosphere. 20 million years later carbon dioxide was 50% less prevalent and a new study suggests that it was moss that allows those levels to shoot down so far and so quickly.
The study suggests that a chemical reaction between moss and CO2 caused levels to drop so drastically in a rather short period of time.
Researcher was conducted between two British universities who studied how today’s mosses draw nutrients from rocks. Known as weathering the process helps deplete carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.
According to one of the researchers:
“The humble moss has created the climate which we enjoy today, from which the life we see all around us evolved.”
Originally scientists believed that it was bigger plants and trees that cooled the earth and depleted carbon dioxide about 100 million years after moss was formed.
