Next Up On The Robot Front - The Mantabot

Drones are the hot topic in robotics circles these with everyone from the military to environmentalists creating their own special use robots. Whether it be for delivering deadly payloads to mapping the world’s oceans drones are becoming an everyday part of our world and scientists in this area are constantly looking for new types of drones to create as well as making the technology as a whole better.

This newest type of drone comes from professor Hilary Bart-Smith at the University of Virginia and looks to mimic the swimming style of the ocean going manta ray, and as you can see in the video below they done a scarily good job of accomplishing that task.

There is no word on such a drone would be used for but the research team says its primary reason right now is to explore the future of bio-mechanical engineering through the manta ray’s unique way of moving through the ocean.
