Ray Bradbury, Sci-Fi Author Extraordinaire Passes Away At Age 91

Anyone who is a fan of the science fiction genre will without a doubt recognize the name Ray Bradbury as he has been a moving force in the world of sci-fi and an inspiration to many writers in the genre today.

Well today we lost that great talent as it was announced that he had passed away this morning at the age of 91.

From books like Fahrenheit 451 and The Illustrated Man to stories used in shows like “The Twilight Zone” and “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” Ray Bradbury became a staple to science fiction fans like myself.

His grandson, Danny Karapetian, had this to say about his grandfather on the news of his passing:

If you’re looking for any single passage to remember him by, I just picked up my copy ofThe Illustrated Man, my favorite of his books. The introduction is entitled “Dancing, So As Not to Be Dead,” and there are some great lines about death. My favorite:

“My tunes and numbers are here. They have filled my years, the years when I refused to die. And in order to do that I wrote, I wrote, I wrote, at noon or 3:00 A.M.

So as not to be dead.”

I’m an actor, something he was always been really proud of, and told me once, after getting cast in a play. “You’re living out my life! You’re doing everything I wanted to do but couldn’t!” He was such a driving force in my life, but what always fascinated me were his impact on others. How his stories lifted people up and saved them from lonely summers. Who among us was never buried deep in a Bradbury story, lost in his meticulously yet effortlessly crafted metaphor?

I know that I lost many hours and night’s sleep after being pulled into the worlds that Bradbury created and he will be sorely missed.

About the Author

Steven has been around the tech world long enough to see most of the stuff we think of cool happen before which leads to a certain bit of cynicism that has contributed to him being known as the cranky old fart of the Internet. Besides sharing some of the goodness that he finds with you here at 42x you can also find him curating some digital goodness at Winextra (tech type stuff) and Rotten Gumdrops (for your daily dose of WTF).
