‘Ain’t No Homos Gonna Make It To Heaven’ Pastor Hides, Claims Death Threats
A video that went viral earlier this week depicting a small boy gleefully singing that gay people were condemned to burn in hell for eternity as a terrifying crowd of congregants cheered the tot on may have caused some angry backlash against the church where it was filmed, and those involved with the organization say death threats have resulted.
Indiana’s Apostolic Truth Tabernacle Church’s Pastor Jeff Sangl is “on vacation” at an undisclosed location after the disturbing video made the internet rounds, sparking outcry and upset that the child had been prompted to sing a song titled “Ain’t no homos gonna make it to heaven.”
In the wake of the controversy, the church posted a weaselly-worded statement to their site suggesting that they did not support hate, but did preach “scripture,” reading:
“The Pastor and members of Apostolic Truth Tabernacle do not condone, teach, or practice hate of any person for any reason. We believe and hope that every person can find true Bible salvation and the mercy and grace of God in their lives. We are a strong advocate of the family unit according to the teachings and precepts found in the Holy Bible. We believe the Holy Bible is the Divinely-inspired Word of God and we will continue to uphold and preach that which is found in scripture.”
ThinkProgress notes that coincidentally, the church is located in the same area in which one of the teens who had committed suicide and inspired the “It Gets Better” campaign started by Dan Savage was from the same area in which the church is located.
