Microsoft Offers Feds Access To Private Cloud Servers

Microsoft has taken its Office 365 suite of online office tools to the next level by offering governmental agencies the chance to use those tools on a secure server designed only for governmental use.

Known as Microsoft Office 365 for Government the platform resides on its own servers, isolating government agencies from other Microsoft 365 cloud server customers.

According to Microsoft’s Kirk Koenigsbauer, corporate vice president of Microsoft Office the government is getting its own servers because:

“We know that security and privacy play a big role in any decision to move to the cloud.”

The service also offers some updated security standards that are in line with the U.S. Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and the U.S. Federal Information Security Management Act (FISMA).

Microsoft in September announced that it would build a $150 million data center right next to a second $499 million facility that was already under construction in the Fed friend area of southern Virginia.

Microsoft in the meantime was awarded a $49.3 million e-mail contract in 2010, a bid that Google sued over claiming that the government contract was awarded to Microsoft under unfair bidding conditions.
