Colin Powell Comes Out… in Support of Gay Marriage

Well, Glee has a lot to answer for, with yet another prominent figure publicly endorsing legalizing same-sex unions- and a Republican to boot.

Colin Powell, who has broken step with Republicans on a few significant issues in recent years, has gone on the record as a supporter of gay marriage. In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer, Powell straightforwardly came out in favor of gay marriage, not even hedging with a remark about “evolving” or “getting ahead of [one’s] skis.”

Powell said:

“I have no problems with it… I don’t see any reason not to say that [same-sex couples] should be able to get married under the laws of their state or the laws of the country.”

He added:

“In terms of the legal matter of creating a contract between two people that’s called marriage… and allowing them to live together with the protection of law, it seems to me is the way we should be moving in this country. And so I support the president’s decision.”

Powell defended the controversial Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell policy as the best America could do at the time, and pointed to how much has changed in the intervening two decades to make the policy obsolete.
