Saturated Fats Makes Dumber Your Brain Thinking Stuff, Study Finds

Saturated Fat and Brain Functioning

Scientists have known for quite some time now that Saturated fats can cause cardiovascular and other disease and now a new study published in the Annals of Nuerology is claiming that the dangerous fats can actually lead to a decline in cognitive functioning.

Researchers from Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston analzyed 6,000 women aged 65 or older over the source of four years. During that time they found that women who consumed a larger amount of saturated fat such as red meat, butter and full-fat dairy products scored worse on cognitive function tests than women who consumed mostly polyunsaturated fats found in corn and vegetable oils.

According to study author Dr. Oliva Okereke in an interview with the Telegraph:

“When looking at changes in cognitive function, what we found is that the total amount of fat intake did not really matter, but the type of fat did. Substituting in the good fat in place of the bad fat is a fairly simple dietary modification that could help prevent decline in memory.”

What researchers are attempting to stress is that saturated fats continue to wreak havoc on a persons body. According to the study:

“Our analysis suggests if you substitute out 5 percent of your saturated fat calories with 5 percent monounsaturated fats, you could have a 50 percent lower risk [of memory and cognitive decay].”

The study finds that women who consume high levels of saturated fats appear to have a brain that functions at five or six years older than their biological age.

On a side note women who consumed mostly monounsaturated fats appeared to have brains that were six to seven years younger.
