0Lesbian Arrested in NC For Trying to Obtain Marriage License, Civil Disobedience
A day after controversial legislation was passed in North Carolina permanently altering the state’s constitution to ban same-sex unions (and taking down some heterosexual couples in the process), a lesbian was reportedly arrested for seeking a marriage license in the state.
Several gay couples presented at the Winston-Salem registrar’s office in defiance of the law, seeking marriage licenses on the day following the ruling that divided America further on the issue and prompted a clarification from President Barack Obama on the issue of same-sex marriages.
Amendment One has caused a significant deepening of the rift between many Americans on the issue, and the couples who attempted to defy the law were told by a clerk that the office “cannot issue you a marriage license because it is not allowed under North Carolina law.”
52-year-old Mary Jamis of Mocksville and a heterosexual friend were arrested at the site of the protest for blocking the entrance to the office as well as refusing to leave more than 30 minutes after the location closed when licenses would not be issued for gay couples. The pair were charged with second-degree trespass, a misdemeanor.
