Yahoo Claims Facebook Purchased Patents To “Retaliate” After Lawsuit Was Filed

Facebook Lawsuit

If Yahoo executives didn’t expect Facebook to retaliate after the company used the tragically flawed US Patent system to take Facebook to court over 10 alleged patent infringements they were wrong. The faltering company in a strongly worded response to Facebook’s purchase of 8 patents necessary for site operation states:

“No employee or officer of Facebook or any affiliated company conceived of, reduced to practice, or developed the alleged inventions claimed in the eight patents acquired from non-practicing entities. In fact, the applications for many of these patents predate Facebook itself.”

Yahoo claims Facebook is violating 10 patents which focus on personalized advertising, customized portal pages and news feeds, recommendations to connect with other suggested users, social music and messaging applications, and authorizing some users to see different sections of your content while keeping other users away from that content.

In the meanwhile Facebook purchased patents regarding basic web functionality including search, headline feeds, photo tagging and basic advertising.

Yahoo in its most recent court file claims Facebook lacked a “good faith” reason for purchasing the patents, noting:

“On information and belief, many, if not all, of these patents were acquired by Facebook for purposes of retaliation against Yahoo in this case.”

In the meantime Yahoo is denying that it is infringing on Facebook’s newly acquired patents, which seems odd since they seem so insistent that the patents are malicious to their causes.
