Student Barred From Prom After Her Date Backs Out, School Stands By Decision

A prom date changing their mind after committing to attend the social event of most high school students lives so far is in and of itself traumatic, especially given kids today shell out ludicrous amounts of dough to attend the dances that were once held in school gyms.

Limousine rental, formal attire, after parties, tickets and hair and makeup are setting kids back hundreds and even thousands of dollars, which has gotten a bit silly. But also silly? The fact that a Pennsylvania high school student has been uninvited to the prom by her own school because she no longer has a male escort.

17-year-old Amanda Dougherty is probably experiencing double-barreled mortification right now due to the fact that her date dropped her and the story of her ensuing prom bannination has gone totally viral. For her part, Dougherty has been a bit feminist about the whole thing, saying of her Catholic high school to CBS Philadelphia:

“For them to say we’re not good enough to go without a guy next to us, that’s kind of sickening.”

Indeed, Ms. Dougherty. Her father told the station that his daughter has dropped a considerable amount of cheddar on the affair, planning to attend the event for months. But the office of Catholic Education has not backed down on the decision to bar the dateless teen from the event, telling press in a statement that there are “numerous dances and events throughout the year where dates are not required, but we view the prom as a special social event where a date is required to attend.”

It’s almost like they wanted to add, “sorry, losers.”
