1909 Honus Wagner Card Sells For $1.2 Million At Auction

Honus Wagner Card sells for million

The 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card is referred to by many as the “Holy Grail” of collectors cards and now one of the cards has sold for $1.2 million at a St. Louis auction where 14 bids were placed.

The card was purchased by a New Jersey man who has not been identified.

Released as part of the T206 card series by the American Tobacco Co. between 1909 and 1911 the card is rare because only 200 were released.

With only 60 of the original 200 cards remaining and only 22 in good enough condition for sale the card fetched nearly $300,000 more than the last “Wagner” which was sold in similar shape.

The record for a Honus Wagner card is $2.8 million which was reached last year by NHL great Wayne Gretzky.

While it has never been made clear as to why the card went out of circulation one theory says Wagner didn’t want to promote cigarette smoking to children while another theory suggests that he didn’t want his image used without being paid in royalties.
