Starbucks To Stop Putting Crushed Up Bugs In Drinks

Starbucks Bug Coloring

Starbucks on Thursday announced that they would no longer crush up bugs and put them in drinks as a form of food coloring. US Starbucks stores were using cochineal extra, a form of dye created from crushed insects as a way to color some of their foods, a move that led to a Change.org petition which received 6,500 customer signatures. Each time a customer signed the petition an email was sent to Starbucks headquarters.

In the petition customers complained that the ingredient was neither vegas nor kosher but mostly customers “don’t want crushed bugs in either designer drinks.”

In a statement regarding the company’s decision an executive from Starbucks said:

“We’ve learned that we fell short of your expectations by using natural cochineal extract as a colorant. As our customers you expect and deserve better—and we promise to do better.”

The cochineal extra was found in Strawberries & Creme Frappuccinos and Strawberry Banana Smoothies. Starbucks also used the extract in red velvet whoopee pie, raspberry swirl cake, pink-iced mini donuts, and birthday cake pops.
