Jellyfish Populations Skyrocketing Around the World

Jellyfish Population Explodes

Jellyfish populations are exploding in many parts of the world’s coastal ecosystems according to researchers at the University of British Columbia.

The study was published in April’s journal Hydrobiologia and examined data from numerous species of jellyfish for 45 of the world’s 66 Large Marine Ecosystems.

According to researchers they discovered increasing jellyfish population in 62 percent of the regions analyzed including in the Northweat U.S. Shelf, Antarctica, Hawaii, the Mediterranean and other areas. T

In the study Lucas Brotz, a PhD student with the Sea Around Us Project at UBC notes:

“There has bee`n anecdotal evidence that jellyfish were on the rise in recent decades, but there hasn’t been a global study that gathered together all the existing data until now … Our study confirms these observations scientifically after analysis of available information from 1950 to the present for more than 138 different jellyfish populations around the world.”

A rise in the jellyfish population should be of concern for everyone since that increase can lead to more attacks, clog power plant intake areas and interfere with fishing.

The study also notes that coastal regions have seen a seven percent increase in the jellyfish population.
