0Simpson’s Springfield Not in Oregon After All, It Would Seem
Earlier this month, everyone was somewhat piqued by the revelation that the Springfield featured in long-running animated sitcom The Simpsons was located in Oregon.
That answer to a burning pop-culture question lasted all of five minutes, and it would seem that creator Matt Groening was again misleading fans with a Springfield-related dodge. While news that the real Springfield had finally been revealed was widespread, the answer appears to have been negated in one of the series’ running jokes.
As fans know, the opening sequence of The Simpsons features Bart writing lines on a chalkboard, presumable part of detention. On the most recent episode, the screenshot above shows that Bart actually wrote, “the true location of Springfield is in any state but yours.” Groening joked about the intro to E! saying on the matter:
“I have no idea where the hell it is,” he says in a statement to E! News. “Like all Americans, I flunked geography.”
Oh, burn, Groening! By way of explanation, he says:
“I don’t want to ruin it for people, you know?” Groening replied. “Whenever people say it’s Springfield, Ohio, or Springfield, Massachusetts, or Springfield, wherever, I always go, ‘Yup, that’s right.'”
So it would appear that the answer on the true location of Springfield is there is no true location of Springfield.
