Another function could be added to the lengthy list- ameliorating the symptoms of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, reducing acne and of course, preventing the conception of babies- of birth control pill benefits.

Research has shown some support to the belief that doctors and patients have long suspected anecdotally, that birth control pill usage allows women who suffer intense pain before and during menstruation to experience a reduction in discomfort. The study findings were published in the journal Human Reproduction this week, and it noted that an estimated 600 million working hours are lost each year in the US, to the tune of about $2 million.

Dr. Jenifer Wu of Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City commented on the findings, saying that the study confirmed what many doctors and patients already believed:

“Many obstetrician/gynecologists have used oral contraceptive pills to help alleviate menstrual pain, otherwise known as dysmenorrhea,. This is technically an off-label use of these commonly prescribed medications.”

Wu added that “doctors should include a discussion of all the benefits and risks when presenting birth control options, and the improvement of dysmenorrhea is a significant benefit to oral contraceptive pills.”
