0Yellowfin Tuna Used in Sushi Linked to Previously Mysterious Salmonella Outbreak in Several States
Earlier this month, public health officials were tasked with tracking down the source of a salmonella outbreak that sickened diners in well over a dozen states- but without a lead on what may have caused the food-borne illness, were stymied as to how to protect the public by warning of the danger.
Now officials have located a likely source for the contamination, and say yellowfin tuna commonly used in popular sushi dishes like spicy tuna rolls is the suspect. According to Food Safety News, Moon Marina USA is voluntarily recalling nearly 60,000 lbs. of its “Nakaochi Scrape”product, which is a frozen, ground food product that is described as “tuna backmeat” and is scraped from the bones of the fish.
After the outbreak, several of those sickened were interviewed by public health officials. 81% of those who fell ill consumed sushi in the week preceding their illness, and 91% of those who had consumed sushi reported eating tuna. 84% cited “spicy tuna” as one of the sushi varieties they’d eaten. FSN elaborates:
“The recalled tuna was distributed as Nakaochi Scrape AA or AAA and may have been divided into smaller lots by other companies before further distribution. The original packaging is a white box with black writing naming Moon Marine USA Corporation (also known as MMI) as the importer and containing the labels “Nakaochi Scrape AA or “Nakaochi Scrape AAA.” The boxes contain vacuum-wrapped packages with no markings.”
In the investigation, those affected by the salmonella outbreak associated with tuna sushi were located in 21 states.
