0Cory Booker on Dramatic Fire Rescue: “We Were Just Fighting For Our Lives”
If anyone won the internet Friday, it was superhero Newark mayor Cory Booker, who, if you’ve not yet heard, rushed into a towering inferno on the way home from a TV appearance, risking his life to save a Newark resident from a house fire.
Booker has a bit of a rep for being a no-nonsense, “be the change you want to see in the world” type person. And as news spread Friday of the daring rescue, Booker became a lighthearted joke on Twitter as tweeters lauded the mayor for his heroism. The hashtag #corybookerstories painted the young politician as somewhat of a Chuck Norris character, but in his own retellings, Booker is very honest about the fear he felt racing into the blaze- which kind of makes it all the more impressive and adorable that he did so.
Speaking to Jersey press Friday, Booker doesn’t couch the fact that he was terrified- but he went in anyway. He explains:
“When I got through the kitchen and was searching for her and looked back an saw the kitchen in flames it was really a frightening experience for me… I didn’t think we were going to get out of there. Just as I was looking down, finding somewhere to breathe, I heard her.”
You know what happened next? Cory Booker grabbed the woman from her bed and carried her to safety, like some sort of Cory Booker fan fiction I am now going to write. Booker continues:
“Every time I breathed in, I just a felt a blackness… We were just fighting for our lives.”
Booker was treated for smoke inhalation, as well as second-degree burns to his hands- still no cure for ultra-dreaminess, though.
