0Thomas Kinkade, ‘Painter of Light,’ Dies Suddenly in Los Gatos
If you don’t know the name Thomas Kinkade, but you’ve stayed in a lower mid-range hotel, you’ve probably seen his work.
A favorite of QVC and HSN fans across the country, Kinkade dubbed himself the ‘Painter of Light,’ specializing in bland landscapes and creating heavily commercialized pieces for middle America. To Kinkade, the derivative style was an allusion to his Christian faith, and in an interview a decade ago, he explained:
“I’m a warrior for light… With whatever talent and resources I have, I’m trying to bring light to penetrate the darkness many people feel.”
If not original or necessarily thrilling, Kinkade’s work did have reach- versions of the painter’s works hang in approximately one of 20 American homes. Kinkade passed away suddenly on April 6th in his home, from what his wife Nanette said appeared to be natural causes. In a statement, she commented:
“Thom provided a wonderful life for his family… We are shocked and saddened by his death.”
Family and friends of Thomas Kinkade are planning a memorial service, the details of which have not yet been made publicly available.
