Carson Daly Apologizes After Making Gay Joke, Offending 9/11 Hero’s Mom
Carson Daly, who is apparently still in show business, had to apologize today after a homophobic joke he made that was offensive to many, among them the mom of Mark Bingham- one of the men who is believed to have charged the cockpit of Flight 93 on September 11th.
Daly was making reference to a recent incident aboard a JetBlue flight, and the role of passengers in subduing unruly crew and/or other passengers. The radio host joked that should he ever be on a flight with such a disruption, it would likely be populated with gay men- the joke being that gay people I suppose can’t throw down. Daly said:
“With my luck, it would be like ‘This is the flight going to [the gay pride parade] in San Francisco… I mean, that would be my colleagues. [Effeminate voice.] Uh, we’re headed down to Vegas for the floral convention.”
Alice Hoagland, Bingham’s mom, said that while her son was openly gay, he was also bravely fought the hijackers on that day. She countered:
“Yes, my gay son was known in our family for bringing me flowers on my birthday and Mother’s Day. He also was known for careening down the rugby pitch, and, on the morning of September 11, 2001, for charging unarmed down the aisle of a doomed Boeing 757 to face knife-wielding Islamist thugs in a hijacked cockpit.”
Hoagland continued:
“No one among his pick-up team of fellow passengers was asking ‘Are you straight? Are you gay?’ No one doubted that a guy who weighed 220 and stood 6’4″ tall- who could run over a charging opponent on the field, and ran with the bulls in Pamplona earlier that summer- would be an asset to a desperate group trying to overcome a threat onboard an airliner.”
Upon hearing of Hoagland’s comments, Daly was chastened, and issued the following statement reiterating his support for the gay community:
“I’m truly saddened that my words today suggested otherwise. I’ve long been a supporter of gay and lesbian rights, and I’m saddened that my comments, however unintentional, offended anyone, specifically members of the LGBT community.”
Daly also made a statement to GLAAD, saying:
“The fact that I have hurt anyone is devastating. I’m not that guy. I’m proud to be an ally of the LGBT community and will continue to fight with them.”
It was not disclosed whether or not Carson Daly took Alice Hoagland up on her offer to discuss his remarks further.
