Taiwanese Woman Kills Self While Chatting on Facebook to 9 Friends, None Call Police
Social media is often tarred as being impersonal or even dehumanizing, allowing people to view their friends as numbers or in otherwise two-dimensional ways- and the suicide of 31-year-old Claire Lin will probably be used to bolster that point in the future.
Lin was reportedly despondent on her birthday when her boyfriend did not return home to celebrate with her. And as the Taiwanese woman chatted to nine of her friends on Facebook chat, she slowly filled a room with charcoal smoke and asphyxiated herself. Lin did not keep her actions secret, rather, she made comments to friends such as:
“My room is filled with fumes… I just posted another picture. Even while I’m dying, I still want FB. Must be FB poison. Haha.”
Some friends attempted to discourage the woman from taking her life, but none alerted emergency services, even to do a welfare check on Lin. Lin died on March 18th, and her boyfriend found her body the following day. Facebook reminds users that suicidal friends can be reached out to via Facebook’s Help Center, if you are ever concerned about a friend’s mental health or safety.
