Spike Lee Accidentally Tweets Old People’s Address When Trying to Publicize Location of George Zimmerman’s Home
This weekend, Do The Right Thing director Spike Lee grabbed attention on Twitter after it revealed that he tweeted the home address of Trayvon Martin’s shooter, George Zimmerman.
While in and of itself vigilante justice is not commendable, Lee’s actions are doubly condemnable- as the address he publicly posted on the site is, according to The Smoking Gun, that of a totally uninvolved elderly couple. Whoops. The problem with vigilantes is (besides the whole outside-the-law thing) that angry mobs are rarely the most reasonable folk on Earth, and the move could conceivably put some random old people at risk of bricks through windows, arson or any other number of bits of mischief an understandably angry public may engage in to avenge the death of Trayvon Martin.
The site explains that the misinformation stems from a man named Marcus Higgins, who tweets under the name @maccapone. Higgins tweeted the address at Lee, who retweeted it- but TSG adds:
“The man who shot Martin is George Michael Zimmerman. Higgins has repeatedly identified him as “George W. Zimmerman.”
The residence on Edgewater Circle is actually the home of David McClain, 72, and his wife Elaine, 70. The McClains, both of whom work for the Seminole County school system, have lived in the 1310-square-foot lakefront home for about a decade, records show.”
While Lee’s frustration at a lack of progress on the law enforcement side is not totally unsympathetic, notable tweeters in particular should make an effort to double and triple check their information before sending out villagers with torches, and this is a perfect example of why.
