Sexless Fruit Flies Turn To Alcohol To Drown Their Sorrows

Fruit Flies and Sex

Male fruit flies who are denied sex turn their attention towards alcohol.  A recent study examined how male fruit flies would react when placed in a sexless environment, researchers quickly realized that food dosed with alcohol was avoided by male fruit flies who were engaging in sexual activities.

Researchers believe that fruit flies drink booze to trigger a “reward” chemical in the brain that compensates for the “reward” they received by having sex.

The chemical reaction closely resembles the same reaction human brains feel when confronted by rewards.

To test their theory scientists placed some male fruit flies in a box with females and the males were happy to avoid alcohol when provided with the opportunity for sex. Males that did not have sex however were more than happy to indulge in alcoholic beverages.

In cases where spiked food and normal food was provided the sexless fruit flies chose to drink all night long.
