Update: Michigan Lottery Winner Using Food Stamps Cut Off By State
The anonymous tipster that narced on lottery winner Amanda Clayton- the Michigan woman who snagged a one million dollar jackpot in the state lotto but was later filmed by hidden news camera using food stamps to pay for groceries- is probably a bit pleased with themselves right now.
Clayton was unapologetic when cornered by a news crew, saying that having two homes, no job and bills to pay was justification for continuing on food stamp assistance despite having a few hundred grand stashed in the bank. But public outrage swelled, and the state of Michigan took notice of the outcry.
About two days after the story broke, the state confirmed that Clayton’s access to public funds for food stamps had been cut off, though officials declined to elaborate on what punitive steps, if any, had been taken in the case. Michigan Department of Human Services’ director Maura Corrigan noted in a statement Wednesday that people who continue to receive assistance after a large windfall could be breaking the law:
“Under DHS policy, a recipient of food assistance benefits must notify the state within 10 days of any asset or income change… DHS relies on clients being forthcoming about their actual financial status. If they are not, and continue to accept benefits, they may face criminal investigation and be required to pay back those benefits.”
Corrigan also made reference to “a person (now no longer receiving benefits) who remained on food assistance after winning a lottery jackpot.”
