0International Effort To Excavate Site Of David And Goliath Battle
The city of Azekah in Israel is the location of the legendary battle between David and Goliath but this summer it is also going to be an international archaeological dig seeking to bring that ancient battleground to live again.
Named the Lautenschläger Azekah Expedition the intent is to get a deeper understanding of the city and to shed light on what the archaeologists refer to as some of the most intriguing riddles in the history of the city.
The city was consider to be a prosperous city in its time and historically it held a strategic location which led to it being conquered twice by different Middle Eastern groups.
The expedition is primarily a collaboration between Israeli and German universities but numerous other universities from around the world are also taking part including Duke University from the United States.
“In every square that we are excavating, there will be participants from all over the world,” says Yuval Gadot of Israel’s Tel Aviv University, one of the dig leaders, according to a press release.
“This is a very multinational experience, and the friendships that people build are truly amazing.”
