Carrie The Musical Is Returning, Despite Monumental Broadway Flop In 1988
In 1988 a Broadway rendition of the popular Stephen King movie/book Carrie was released onto the world and it quickly shut down after losing a record setting (at the time) $8 million.
Now it turns out that the “masterminds” behind that rendition are back with an off-broadway version that’s playing at MCC Theater.
Lawrence D. Cohen, Michael Gore, and Dean Pitchford who wrote the book, music, and lyrics have decided audiences 24 years later might have a better perspective on the huge flop.
The play opens on Thursday and features the same story of a bullied teen who uses telekinetic powers to take revenge of her classmates and abusive mother.
According to Cohen:
“We’ve gone back and looked at every single inch, even numbers that were working fine, to see if we could do better.”
The new version of the Carrie musical is directed by Stafford Arima and features new songs and a different structure then the original.
According to the creators the story focuses on two themes that seem very current: bullying and religious fundamentalism.
