0Study Finds Plastic Surgery Actually Does Make You Look Younger, About 7 Years to Be Precise
Plastic surgery often gets a bad rap in the media and in pop culture as the last resort of (mostly) women trying to either desperately look younger or conform to an unhealthy standard of breast size or firmness.
And despite concerns about lengths to which one will go to achieve their desired look, plastic surgery continues to be a popular choice for many people seeking a more youthful appearance- and a new study reveals it’s kind of working. While plastic surgery is frequently criticized for making people look as if they’ve had too much work done, on average, it can actually make people look 7.2 years younger, a new study has found, pinpointing a number culled from data surveying people who had viewed before and after pictures of one surgeon’s work.
Sixty images of patients of Dr. Peter A. Adamson (54 women and six men) were shown to medical students, and the Los Angeles Times explains:
The 40 medical-student “raters” were divided into four groups of 10. Each group viewed the same set of randomized patient photos — 30 pictures for each group, including photographs from before and six months after surgery — and provided estimated ages for the patients. On average, the med students estimated that the patients were 1.7 years younger than their actual chronological age before surgery and 8.9 years younger than their chronological age after surgery.
The study’s authors wrote that patients could expect a “modest but significant reduction in perceived age after aesthetic facial surgery.”
