Tightrope Walker Nik Wallenda Gets Permission To Cross Niagara Falls

Tightrope Walker Nik Wallenda

Nik Wallenda is about to walk a tightrope all the way from the United States to Canada. Wallenda asked for permission to create a tightrope over Niagara Falls and the Ontario Parks Commission just came through after initially denying the request based on cost, safety and the ropes ability to “take away from the beauty of the falls.”

Wallenda told TV stationĀ WIVB:

“To get that green light, I feel like I’m on top of the world. The purpose, the public purpose for actually doing it is to pay tribute to the rich history, the long ago history of tightrope walking and daredevils at Niagara Falls.”

High flying acts are nothing new to Wallenda, he’s a member of the daredevil Wallenda family.

This new feat will take 30 to 45 minutes with the use of a 1,800-foot cable. Wallenda will not use a tether but will have a clip on his belt that will hold him to the wire if something goes wrong and he needs to be retrieved.

This could be the last time a tightrope walker get to walk over the falls, as the commissions interim chairwoman revealed:

“We’ve made it very clear that this is not a regular activity and it’s not something that we’re going to be looking for further applications for. This is a very unique one-off.”

No date has been set for the tightrope feat at this time.
