Malé is the capital and most populous city in the Island Republic of Maldives in the Indian Ocean.
The island is heavily urbanized, with the area taking up nearly its entire landmass. One third of the population of the Maldives lives in Malé, approximately 100,000 people as of 2006.
The city is the only entry point to the nation and the centre of all administration and bureaucracy.
