Howard Stern Makes America’s Got Talent Debut, is Both Sensitive and Cutting

After a week of handwringing, controversial radio personality Howard Stern made his debut on America’s Got Talent, and true to his word, the raunchy DJ was on his best behavior… most of the time.

Stern swore up and down before he appeared on the show that he was a big fan (and prior to his joining the judging panel, he often discussed the show and similar outfits on his own program of his own volition), and that he really wanted to conduct himself respectfully, yet honestly as a judge assessing the many hopefuls on AGT. But his love for the show didn’t stop him from getting a few sharp quips in while giving feedback.

In one instance, Stern joked to a contestant who mentioned his parents had passed away that they’d “died of embarrassment.” For another, he voted the contestant down twice before leaning over to also vote no with fellow judge Howie Mandel’s buzzer. But Stern was equally effusive in praising the hopefuls, telling a father daughter singing team:

“You move me. You guys are spectacular together… I think every father in America right now is like, ‘Wow, that’s the kind of relationship I want to have with my daughter.'”

Stern also was a bit patriotic, telling a team of dancers:

“We are the greatest country in the world. We have the most creative people. You’re everything that makes America great. I applaud your originality and I thank you for lifting everyone’s spirit.”

But he didn’t go soft- of the buzzer, Stern says he likes “hitting it.”
