Legendary NYC Club CBGB May Be Coming Back to NYC

CBGB Reopening

New Yorkers and other music fans may have believed that the legendary Village club CBGB was a total thing of the past, but the venue may be returning to the city.

CBGB won’t be in the same location, however, as the original club now houses a John Varvatos store. And after the historic venue’s 2006 closure, owner Hilly Kristal died of lung cancer, leaving the name to his wife and daughter. But the effort to re-open CBGB in 2012 is stated as one not to recreate the famed club, but rather reinvent it for a new generation.

A spokesman for CBGB conceded as much, saying:

“They are hoping to open a new venue focused on new music… They are not trying to recreate the past but hope to open a space in the spirit of CBGB.”

Like many classic spots in Manhattan, what ultimately did CBGB in was a rent dispute with neighbors in the Bowery area. 2012 also marks the first year the CBGB music festival will take place, over four days in July across Manhattan and Brooklyn.
