0Bouncers Checking Facebook to Verify IDs Now
It’s a scary new world, one in which bouncers can now check your ID against your Facebook account if they want to doubly verify your identity.
In the past, underage drinkers had an array of tricks at their disposal- in New York State in the late 90’s, I recall a spate of license “chalking” to hoodwink door staff in NYC’s hotter venues. But as we all now have a digital trail following us, of course the simple method of obscuring a license’s birthdate as become somewhat obsolete.
The BBC did a piece on bouncers in England using Facebook as an age and identity verifier for youthful looking patrons, and talked to one pub-goer who reports being asked to show her Facebook account in order to prove legal age. 20-year-old Charlotte Neal explains:
“I kind of just logged onto it [Facebook] and showed him the screen and then he didn’t question it any further… When it happened the first time I didn’t really think anything of it.”
Neal continues:
“Then I thought, ‘Hang on, is this really how you’re supposed to check how old I am?’ But I was out and I wanted to get in the club so I just agreed.”
The news site says users from across the UK checked in to report that the practice was becoming commonplace and that many had been subject to a Facebook ID check.
