0‘Let’s Stay Together’: Hopey Seduces Voters With a Bit of Al Green
President Barack Obama had a message for the American voting public yesterday at New York’s Apollo Theater, in a song made re-famous to a younger generation in Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction– Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.”
I suppose it dates me that I refer to Pulp Fiction as the film of younger people, and people in my age group probably remember It’s Showtime at the Apollo as the raucous variety show that used to follow Saturday Night Live like clockwork for many, many years. One of the features was an almost American Idol-esque competition, where hopefuls were either cheered on or booed off (with the latter far more likely) the stage, often within seconds.
Barack Obama visited the historic Harlem theater on Thursday, and though Apollo went off the air in 2008, it appears that back in the day, he may have been a fan. On stage, he broke into a few lines of the 70’s soul classic, crooning to the American voter and then joking:
“Those guys didn’t think I would do it. I told you I was going to do it. The Sandman did not come out.”
Do you think Obama is a shoo-in in 2012?
