0Chocolate Allergies Actually Due to Cockroach Parts in Food, Experts Say
According to some experts, chocolate allergies are actually not down to the chocolate itself, but rather ground up bits of cockroaches in every batch of chocolate.
While the logical question might be “well, are cockroaches somehow magically only attracted to and therefore present in chocolate, and if not, then why does chocolate get this horrific distinction?”, ABC News, who broke the story, says that “cockroaches and their droppings seem to be indigenous to the cocoa bean.” Well, that ruins everything, ever.
Allergist Dr. Morton M. Teich confirms that chocolate is a magnet for bits of cockroach and cockroach excrement (quick, which one is worse?) and says that even switching to fancy-pants premium chocolate won’t resolve the issue. Teich explains:
“Most foods have natural contaminants in them, but there are levels which the FDA deems safe. Anything more than 60 insect pieces per 100 grams of chocolate is rejected by the FDA… Allergists are testing now because they’re finding that asthma can be caused by cockroaches. I have patients whom we’ve tested for cockroach who really get reactions.”
However, Teich adds, if you want a roach-free diet, you have to basically exclude everything you eat right now:
“To avoid [insects in your food], it’s almost impossible… You probably would have to stop eating completely.”
Other foods besides chocolate thought to be high in cockroach include peanut butter, pasta, fruit (what?), cheese, popcorn and wheat. Happy Easter!
