Traffic Cops Now Come With Spy Cams In Their ID Badges

England is well known for being the most spied upon society to date with CCTV cameras literally covering just about every area of the country with the ability to watch you from the time you leave your home to when you return.

Now it seems that they want to go one step further and have every action taken by their Traffic Wardens (similar to our traffic police) as they deal with people. It seems that the ID badges that the Traffic Wardens are now sporting also come with built-in CCTV cameras so that every interaction with the public can be documented.

These things are so small, as you can see in the image above, that you won’t even notice them and on top of that the Wardens aren’t under any obligation to tell you that you are being recorded. Of course officials say that the Wardens are only suppose to turn them on if they ‘suspect’ an impending confrontation.

But Nick Pickles, director of campaign group Big Brother Watch, said: “A tiny warning on a badge hardly constitutes telling someone they’re being recorded. At the very minimum it should be a legal requirement that the member of staff informs the other person they are being recorded, but in reality it’s just another attack on our privacy and treats every member of the public as being under suspicion.

We joke about the world becoming a living example of George Orwell’s 1984 but in reality it is going far beyond that and we are just sitting back and letting it happen.

About the Author

Steven has been around the tech world long enough to see most of the stuff we think of cool happen before which leads to a certain bit of cynicism that has contributed to him being known as the cranky old fart of the Internet. Besides sharing some of the goodness that he finds with you here at 42x you can also find him curating some digital goodness at Winextra (tech type stuff) and Rotten Gumdrops (for your daily dose of WTF).
