0Married couple invoice each other for small bills and … lightbulbs
It’s not unusual for couples to get divorced these days even 70 year-olds who have been married for 20 years but the Australian magistrate that presided over the split of assets thought that their relationship what – to say the least “unusual” and “pernickety”.
You see the couple seeking the divorce after twenty years of marriage had never moved in together, both maintaining separate residences with the husband spending only weekends at his wife’s house. As well they kept their finances totally separate but would invoice each other for amounts as small as 50 cents, including the cost of a light bulb.
This ‘different’ type of relationship didn’t stop them from enjoying doing things together – like trips around the world that saw them go to places like Britain, China, Spain, Alaska, South America, as well as cruises.
Magistrate Michael Baumann said the pair were occasional companions.
“When an intelligent and creative mature age couple decided in 1991 to marry … it might have been anticipated that 20 years later they may have at least preserved and enhanced their financial position and had many happy and shared moments,” he said.
“Alas, nothing could be further from the truth in this case.”
