2Facebook 19 Times More Popular Than Twitter, Pinterest and Tumblr Tie For Second
Facebook has long been the reigning king of social networks, drawing users from across the globe and accounting for a staggering one of every seven minutes spent online.
comScore (by way of ZDNet by way of the Wall Street Journal) has sliced and diced that data into rankings for a different look at Facebook’s dominance, and it’s still pretty- well, staggering. Facebook comes in first when it comes to the social networking game, but Twitter is way down in third place- Tumblr and Pinterest tied for second. LinkedIn is fourth, ahead of MySpace in fifth place and Google+ bringing up the rear in a sad sixth.
The real story here, of course, is not only the rapid rise of Tumblr and Pinterest in relation to older services or those backed by bigger outfits, but the real failure of Google+ to catch on in any meaningful way. One analyst who spoke to the WSJ, Altimeter Group’s Brian Solis, says Google’s failure to communicate the purpose of Google+ when Facebook was so widely adopted hurt the fledgling social network:
“Nobody wants another social network right now… Google hasn’t communicated what the value of Google+ is.”
Google’s VP of product development, Bradley Horowitz, said in an interview that Google+ is “growing by every metric we care about,” but declined to elaborate with harder numbers.
