0It’s A Shark Eat Shark World. Literally. [Meet The Wobbegong Shark Eater]
The Wobbegong might be the scariest shark in the sea, mainly because it’s a shark that literally eats other sharks much in the same way a snake devours its prey.
The photo shown above was released by National Geographic and it’s the only known photograph of the carpet shark eating a bamboo shark. Researchers for some time now have known that the carpet shark eats other smaller sharks because of the content found in their stomachs, however this is the first verifiable image based proof of a carpet shark on bamboo shark kill.
The photo was taken by Daniela Ceccarelli of Australia’s Research Council Center of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies who said of the photograph:
“The first thing that caught my eye was the almost translucent white of the bamboo shark… It became clear that the head of the bamboo shark was hidden in (the Wobbegong’s) mouth. The bamboo shark was motionless and definitely dead.”
If you’re wondering how the carpet shark is able to eat it’s prey the predator basically eats like a snake in which it dislocates its jaw to fit more foot into it’s mouth at one time, including larger prey.
